Change

When things change in our life, often we have resistance to the change. But if you understand the structure of the Universe, life, and creation, then you will understand that life is change, and nothing ever stands still. Everything is energy, and energy is in continual motion and change. If energy stood still you would be gone, and there would be no life.

Change is always happening for the good of you and for everyone. It is the evolution of life.

Have a blessed day

Don't Procrastinate

Procrastination is another excuse to remain in your comfort zone. Get out there and do what you always wanted to do. If you want to succeed in anything you do, you can't sit around and wait for it to happen. Greatness comes with putting in the effort, so go out there and get your goal/ dream. It's not easy....no one said it would be easy. If it was easy, everybody would do it. Make the effort today and make a difference in your tomorrow. Have a great day. Climb on!

Early Hike with a swim at the falls

The rewards of hiking in the early hours of the morning is absolutely amazing...the fresh  dew on the plants and grass and the birds singing around you....feels like they are welcoming you to their paradise. I couldn't resist taking a dip in the waterfall....refreshing to say the least

Training going well

So my training pretty much looks like this at the moment: EVERY day...only one rest day. I generally do 60 minutes on the stair-master - with ankle weights &/or depending on my day...I also walk 3.5-4.5 on 15% gradient  incline on the treadmill with ankle weights, as well as a 10-15kg backpack....sjoe, talk about sweating...I'm like a tap of running water lol....I also alternate with cardio and core training... On weekends I generally do  long hikes & rock climbing.

Gear review K-Way BackPack and Talus Floppy Hat

I love the K-way brand. You will notice that I have this on my summit for Kilimanjaro as well.
I had the honour of being sponsored with some gear by Cape Union Mart and tested out some gear with weekend hikes and rock climbing at the crags. This is important because you don't want to go on an expedition and then realise that the gear is not suited for the climb / trek. I will give a gear review on the rest of the gear after expedition climbs, as these I can only use in cold weather conditions.

Here goes:

K-Way Kilimanjaro 35L Backpack
This is a great backpack for day hikes, overnight stays and the important part of your day pack while on expeditions. I love the layout and construction of this backpack. It has enough space for everything you require and is built for extreme conditions, It's perfect for serious day-hikes, with side pockets on the hipbelt for snacks and the essential sunblock and hand sanitiser. It has a strong, external frame assembly, and offers excellent support and ventilation, especially in the Johannesburg hiking areas, where it's very hot and dry hiking weather -it functions very well. The harness and waist straps are nicely padded, very comfortable, and sit well on the hips and shoulders; no pinch points or rubbing spots. The high density foam has plenty of ventilation holes backed by a hard wearing mesh for good breathability. It offers a high degree of tuning from the adjustable straps which secure well and don't need to be regularly re-tensioned. Side compression straps cinch the pack in firmly and the quick release clips and fittings are robust. Storage wise, the backpack is amazing and has a couple of other useful smaller zip pockets compartments, which allow easy access to your most needed items and to store things securely inside the pack. The spacious internal storage is accessed from large zippered front panels, which extends below the mid-point of the pack allowing you to retrieve kit without having to rummage through the backpack. In the main compartment, there is an easily accessed pouch for a hydration bladder that will take a 3L Camelback. A rain cover rounds off this backpack nicely.

Can I find a fault? Perhaps just one....that is the side mesh pockets for water bottles. I found that it was too shallow for my water bottles, as I drink water mostly from my water bottles and allow my camelpack bladder to be a reserve.

In conclusion; if you are looking for a reliable, robust, long term pack to do everything you ask of it then look no further. From expedition treks, weekends hikes, camping trips to trad / sports climbing at the crags, you will find it a trusted companion.

K-Way Talus Floppy Hat

The Talus Floppy is a wide brimmed that features a towling sweat band and an adjustable chin strap. This Hat is awesome and offers great face, neck, and shoulder coverage and the mesh sides provide ventilation so you don't overheat. It's lightweight and easy to store in your backpack.

I would like to personally thank Gabrielle Stein, the Marketing Manager, at Cape Union Mart for generously supplying me with gear to use in the Peak Challenge.

Trad Climbing in Hamerkop Kloof - Magaliesberg

A few weeks ago, I went on a rock climbing trip for the day in Bronkies. This was great fun and it was a Sports climb. This means that permanent fixed protection including bolts and anchors which enable a climber to place quickdraws as they ascend the rock. I found this challenging and good fun. Today I went into the Magalies for Traditional (Trad) climbing – is where there is no permanent fixed protection on the rock and therefore the climber places temporary protection themselves before clipping into it. I had a lead climber, but I didn't feel at all comfortable climbing and it was making me nervous as hell. We spent a wonderful day out in the gully, but at the end of the day, I was all tense because I was so nervous and "scared" I have now decided to stick to sports climbing, until I feel more confident in rock climbing and I need to also train more on lead climbing - a climber tied into a dynamic rope and periodically clips into protection they have placed (trad climbing) or into a quickdraw clipped to a fixed bolt/ anchor (sport climbing). This is to protect them in case of a fall where a belayer can catch them on the rope.
Common sense is key to climbing.
When learning, always climb with either a professional (i.e. instructor) or an experienced friend. Don’t hesitate to question your instructor or climbing partner no matter their experience level, a good partner won’t mind you questioning their methods or checking safety.
  • Make sure when climbing you are always ‘safe’ and secured to the rope or an anchor via a ‘cows tail’ at all times!
  • Double check your knots and anchors
Having said this, I still had an awesome day and the views at the Magalies is just stunning.....
